Education

Professor Iria Giuffrida is a seasoned international disputes lawyer and a leading academic authority, with extensive experience advising clients on high-value and complex contentious and transactional matters in domestic and international contexts. Her work in international arbitration under ICC and LCIA rules and litigation before national courts spans various sectors, including financial services, energy, construction, information technology, competition, and data protection. Her experience encompasses matters carrying significant commercial and regulatory exposure, requiring regular and tight collaboration with cross-border teams. She has been entrusted with responsibility for core strategic, procedural, and evidential aspects of proceedings, from early case assessment through to hearings, settlement, and resolution.

Professor Giuffrida serves as Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs & Development at William & Mary and Professor of the Practice of Law at the Law School. Her research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and law. She consults with Hexagon on matters related to AI, cybersecurity, and technology-driven legal risk, drawing on her expertise in AI governance, data privacy, and the legal and ethical implications of emerging technologies. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).

Acting for a renowned luxury brand in an LCIA arbitration arising from a failed joint venture in the Middle East, including preliminary issues and expedited proceedings, ultimately resolved by settlement
Representing sellers in an LCIA arbitration relating to deferred consideration under the sale of a wind farm project, involving claims valued in the tens of millions and resolved following mediation
Assisting in the pre-action phase of a multi-billion-dollar ICC arbitration in the oil and gas sector, including preparation of termination notices and early disclosure strategy
Acting in an LCIA arbitration between chemical companies concerning an alleged breach of Article 101 TFEU, including market definition and economic expert evidence
Serving as lead associate in a successful ICC arbitration concerning an approximately USD 80 million construction dispute
Acting in complex, multi-jurisdictional proceedings arising from Madoff-related investments, involving Bermuda, New York, London, Paris, and Monaco
Acting for a foreign bank in a jurisdictional dispute concerning performance bonds and indemnities linked to an early production facilities agreement in the Middle East
Acting for a hedge fund in a USD 100 million dispute between former partners, involving expedited proceedings, extensive disclosure, and settlement during trial
Representing a large pension fund in a dispute with Lehman Brothers arising from the termination of a 1992 ISDA Master Agreement following Chapter 11 proceedings
